In a living room, rugs often serve as the focal point. It's important to consider your placement here so that furniture doesn't feel crowded, and these are a few simple rules of thumb.

In the dining room, your aim is to create a sense of balance between the rug and table and ensure there's enough space for your chairs. To achieve this, you'll want to allow for at least two feet behind each one when pulled out. 

• Loose fibers, known as sprouts, are common in handmade rugs and may be trimmed with scissors.
• As with all fine fibers, fading may occur over time, especially if your rug is placed in direct sunlight.
• Rotate your rug every six months to prevent uneven fading and wear.
• Moisture can damage fine rugs. Blot, don’t rub, when spills occur.
• Vacuum regularly to remove surface dirt.
• When needed, have your rug professionally cleaned by experts skilled in the care of handmade rugs.

• Before vacuums, brooms were used to sweep fine rugs (and they still work well, especially on a rug’s edges or fringe).
• Canister vacuums are ideal for the care of handcrafted rugs as their hand-held cleaning attachments use suction to clean without the help of beater bar, or rotating brush, which may loosen the fibers of fine rugs.
• Should your vacuum have a bare floor setting, use that setting to raise the rotating brush as you care for handmade rug, avoiding the rug’s edges and fringe when possible.

The following is a general recommendation. Be sure to check any specific requirements for your rug before cleaning:

• Blot, don’t rub, when spills occur and clean with a small amount of mild soap followed by a solution made from equal parts white vinegar and cold or lukewarm water.
• Do not use hot water or oxygen cleaners on your rug. Remove any remaining moisture with dry towels.
