How to Choose the Perfect Rug Size for Every Room
Why rug size matters more than you think
A rug is the foundation a room is built on. Get the size right and everything — sofa, table, chairs — feels intentional and connected. Get it wrong and even beautiful furniture can look like it's floating. Before you fall in love with a pattern, start with the measurements.
Living room
The most flattering look is a rug large enough that at least the front legs of every seat rest on it. This visually ties the seating area together.
- Small living room: 5x7 or 6x9 ft — front legs of the sofa on the rug.
- Standard living room: 8x10 ft — all sofa legs on, coffee table centered.
- Large / open-plan: 9x12 or 10x14 ft — the whole seating group sits on the rug.
Bedroom
You want a soft landing for your feet when you get out of bed. Place the rug under the lower two-thirds of the bed so it extends 45–60 cm (18–24 in) beyond the sides.
- Queen bed: 8x10 ft.
- King bed: 9x12 ft.
- Compact rooms: a 3x5 ft accent on each side, or one runner at the foot.
Dining room
The rug should be large enough that chairs stay on it even when pulled out — about 60 cm (24 in) of rug beyond the table edge on all sides.
- 4-seat table: 6 ft round or 6x9 ft rectangular.
- 6-seat table: 8x10 ft.
- 8-seat table: 9x12 or 10x14 ft.
Entryways & hallways
A 3x5 ft rug welcomes guests at the door, while a runner softens a long hallway — leave roughly 10 cm (4 in) of floor visible on each side.
A quick trick before you buy
Tape out the rug's dimensions on your floor with painter's tape and live with it for a day. You'll instantly feel whether the size works with your furniture and walkways.
Once you know your size, the fun part begins — choosing the shape, pattern, and texture that makes the room yours.
